I picked up M. Chapoutier Belleruche Côtes du Rhône 2009 since I had enjoyed Les Vignes de Bila Haut Côtes du Roussillon Villages a couple of months back. Michel Chapoutier’s reputation for consistent quality, value and natural production methods fundamentally ensures a fantastic pour. Chapoutier is a world-renowned Rhône Valley winemaker, visionary and pioneer in biodynamic winemaking. Since taking over the family firm in 1990 at the age of 26, his passion and commitment have resulted in an unsurpassed consistency of high quality wines; he's produced the most 90+ point ratings of all Rhône producers, and 16 ‘100 point’ wines. In addition to experimenting with cutting edge winemaking techniques, his innovative biodynamic methods include: treating the vines with herbs rather than chemicals, following the moon calendar for vine care, using 50-100 year old vines that produce small harvests, yet highly concentrated flavours, and using only natural yeasts to produce unfiltered wines. Since 1996 all M. Chapoutier labels have been marked with Braille. The design is inspired by a friend of the family [and former vineyard owner] who invented the first abbreviated version of Braille.
Red-violet in colour, after aerating aromas of raspberry, rhubarb and wisps of cedar radiated from the glass. Traces of earthy minerals and silky smooth tannins complemented the lush, fruity flavours of blueberry, red currents and raspberry that abounded in the medium body. Spicy pink peppercorn and dense black cherry notes were embraced by hints of sweet vanilla and warm, spicy cinnamon elements in the moderate finish.
