Domaine Pélaquié Côtes du Rhône 2009

I love Rhône wines. Nearly 80% of Rhône bottles are Côtes du Rhône, an appellation that runs throughout the Rhône Valley and totals about 140,000 acres. They can be incredibly budget friendly but the quality can vary greatly. I encountered Domaine Pélaquié Côtes du Rhône 2009 in my local wine shop at a very budget friendly price and enthusiastically added it to my basket. I'm always up for a wine adventure, and I felt from the vintage and estate bottling that this had promise to be a fantastic pour. Since the 16^th century, the Pélaquié family has been cultivating the same land and producing wine. For all of those hundreds of years, the estate has been passed down from father to son. Luc Pélaquié is currently heading the domaine of 70 hectares, passionate about his land he practices sustainable viticulture and firmly believes in following his family’s long-held traditions.

Dark red-violet in colour, after aerating aromas of blackberry and pink peppercorn radiated from the glass. Jammy flavours of blackberry and blackcurrant were joined by nuances of roasted thyme in the medium body. Spicy black pepper and earthy, edgy clove incorporated traces of baked cherry on toast in the lengthy finish. Saturated with fruit and spice, this is a fantastic value and a lovely glass for the table.
