Block Nine Caiden’s Vineyards Pinot Noir 2011




I was only able to chew on one side of my mouth after a rather disagreeable trip to the dentist, so I was cooking a mushy dinner of cheesy polenta and eggs. I fancied an uncomplicated bottle to accompany my dinner and multiple ibuprofen tabs so I popped open Block Nine Caiden’s Vineyards Pinot Noir 2011. Block Nine was established to offer Pinot enthusiasts on a budget more of a middle range option between higher priced mid-market Pinot and mass-produced inexpensive bottles. Headed by winemaker and Pinot Noir specialist Larry Levin from Dry Creek Vineyard, Robert Mondavi and Ravenswood fame [to name just a few], Block Nine only makes Pinot Noir. Although the label suggests a single vineyard, through his many connections, Levin sources grapes from select vineyards in various California growing regions.
Bright transparent ruby red with a light pink rim, aromas of violets, strawberry and damp earth rose from the glass. Traces of earthy elements and warm oak complimented bright berry flavours of strawberry and raspberry in the light to medium body. Whispers of white pepper and dried violets lingered briefly between each sip. Simple and easy drinking, this is a pleasant glass great with light dishes or on its own.

    1. The name Caiden's Vineyards does actually imply the the vineyards are in a singular location. According to the producer of the wine, the grapes were sourced from various independent vineyards all over the state of California, as seen in the AVA not being specific, but rather just "California". This does not imply bad quality, in fact many fantastic wines are produced in this manner.

      Just for your reference, this is a blog for wine lovers to have productive conversations regarding their wine experiences. While I have no problem accepting constructive criticism of the blog or my writing, next time, please stay away from catty comments that do not contribute something meaningful to the discussion.
