In addition to the world recognised wine authority Robert Parker, both US and European critics have declared that the 2009 Bordeaux vintage is an excellent one. Therefore, I am always on the lookout for '09 Bordeaux, especially since within the budget friendly range the 2010s have been released and tend to be dominant on the shelves.[Although accolades are pouring in for the 2010 vintage and it looks to be just as outstanding as the '09] I luckily found Château Saint-Sulpice Bordeaux
2009 in my local wine shop and enthusiastically gave it a pour.
Château Saint-Sulpice is a 100
acre estate located in northern Entre-Deux-Mers 14 miles northeast of the city
of Bordeaux. Owner and 8th generation winemaker Pierre Duberge and
his son Christophe tend the mostly Merlot vineyards with great care and respect
and practice sustainable farming. They work the soil in a traditional manner,
without the use of any chemicals; they also strive to limit oenological additives
as much as possible during production. They have found that their sustainable
method with its balance of “tradition and modernity” has reduced their
production costs and elevated the quality of their wine.
Dark garnet in colour, after decanting aromas of
black olive, fresh herbs and gamey earth swirled about in the glass. Red current,
cherry and traces of dried violets and caramel were supported by earthy, gamey
elements in the medium body. Spicy black pepper and candied cherry notes
comprised the lengthy finish. Silky smooth and easy drinking, this is a
wonderful glass for the table, or sipping on its own.
