I had picked up Leo
Steen Calpella 2009 a few months back because I fancied the brown paper recycled label and was intrigued by the Carignane and Petite Syrah blend. Leo
Steen was founded in 2004 by Danish sommelier and winemaker Leo Hanson. One of
his goals is to introduce people to character-driven, food friendly wines from
undiscovered vineyards; he accomplishes this by crafting “interesting wines
with both sense of place and a purpose”. He is devoted to a “gentle approach”
to winemaking that focuses on natural methods including lower alcohol, less oak
and natural yeast only. The grapes were sourced from 50-60 year old vines from
Testa Vineyards in Mendocino County. The vineyard was established by Italian
immigrants in the 1950’s, it is certified organic and still family owned and
operated.
Inky
dark violet with ruby highlights, intense aromas of gamey smoked meat, wild
roses and ripe cherry radiated from the glass. Dense blueberry and cherry
flavours joined rich chocolate and traces of earthy, smoked meat elements in
the full body. Spicy white pepper, cinnamon and dried roses were embraced with
wisps of smoky cedar in the lengthy finish. Plush, velvety and rustic, this is
a wise and splendid glass that keeps you reaching for more.
