On a frigid wintery
night with temperatures well below zero degrees, my sister and I fancied a concentrated,
spicy bottle to lend us some warmth. Perusing thru my racks, we decided that Bodegas
Carchelo “C” 2010 would be a great companion to an evening of blankets on the
couch, Netflix and comfort food.
Bodegas Carchelo was
founded in the early 1980’s with a vision to modernize viticulture in an area
that had lain stagnant for quite some time. Today there are nearly 700 acres of
vineyards that stretch across the Jumilla region, with varying altitudes,
exposures and soil composition. The estate only uses half of the grapes they
produce in order to allow for strict selection of grapes for high quality
wines.
Deep violet with
crimson highlights, after decanting for about 15 minutes aromas of rich
blueberry, minerals and warm cinnamon radiated from the glass. Jammy blueberry,
black current and cherry fruits were underscored by velvety tannins in the full
body. Spicy black pepper and earthy minerals were joined by dense raisin notes
in the lengthy finish. Big and bold, this is an easy drinking glass popping with jammy fruit and dark spice.
