I picked up Franco
Todini Relais Sangiovese-Petit Verdot 2009 since I thought the grape combination
was interesting and could make for a tasty glass. The Todini Estate is part
of a family owned holding company that promotes the use of modern techniques,
strategic business partnerships and entrepreneurial style. The estate is
located in the Umbrian hills and consists of over 300 hectares with 70 of those
currently devoted to vines. With a focus on proper land management, great care
is given to have a minimal impact on the environment. Balancing farming activities and environmental
protection, the estate’s motto is “We are not interested in short term results,
we prefer to reach our goals slowly but surely fully respecting the rules of
sustainability”.
Dark red-violet in
colour, after decanting for about 30 minutes aromas of warm baking spices, ripe
blueberry and cherry rose from the glass. Dense, jammy pie flavours of
blackberry, blueberry and cherry were supported by traces of molasses and
earthy elements in the full body. Spicy black pepper, rich raisin and traces of
toasty oak resounded in the elongated finish. Hearty and robust, this is a
fantastic glass for a rich meal or velvety sipping by itself.
