Fruity, velvety
with soft tannins and a bright acidity, Barbera is a lovely companion with
dinner and for everyday enjoyment. They generally also are very budget friendly. As
I prepared dinner of Thai faux chicken and wild rice, I enthusiastically gave a
pour to Pizzorni La Severina Barbera D’Asti 2010. The Pizzorni estate was founded in 1929 by
Paolo Pizzorni’s grandparents. The family has a firm commitment to viticulture
and believes that a good wine is born in the vineyard. Paolo personally tills
the vineyards and regards the grapevine as “a life philosophy, a way of being”.
Red-violet in colour,
after aerating aromas of nutmeg, cinnamon and violets rose from the glass.
Dried black cherry and strawberry flavours were underscored by earthy elements
in the medium body. Tart Cherry and raisin elements comprised the pleasantly
dry finish. Smooth, easy drinking and rustic this is a fantastic accompaniment
to any meal.
