I picked up
Château De L’Estang Côtes de Castillon Bordeaux 2008 because it was an
inexpensive ’08 Bordeaux that I considered worth the gamble that it would be a
tasty glass. The 2008 vintage wasn’t a bad year in Bordeaux; it just was not
the phenomenal 2009 or 2010 vintages that are swiftly being scooped up in every
price range. The general consensus is that
whilst the 2008 wines are not as powerful and have a more limited drinking
window, they are still well structured with fresh fruit flavours and bright
acidity. Château De
L’Estang consists of 53 acres located in Saint Genes de Castillon on the Right
Bank in Bordeaux. Occasionally with these smaller estates in lesser known
appellations it is difficult to track vineyard and winery details; unfortunately
the above is all I managed to find.
Dark cranberry-garnet
in colour, after aerating aromas of sour cherry and toast rose from the glass.
Tart cherry and pomegranate flavours were supported by earthy elements in the
light to medium body. Slightly astringent green tea tannins gave way to white
peppercorn and dark chocolate notes in the clean finish. Silky smooth, this becomes
an easy drinking glass at the table good for slugging down with a meal.
