My sister loves
Tempranillo and knows that it’s not one of my most favourite grapes although I do fancy
many Riojas; therefore she will regularly bring over bottles of Tempranillo
for us to enjoy. I’m still not sure whether it’s to try to change my mind or just
pester me in that sisterly fashion. Either way I admittedly appreciate it, and
was keen to give a pour to the Faustino VII Rioja 2009 she brought over. Bodegas
Faustino is a family run winery that was founded in 1861 by Eleuterio Martinez
Arzok when he began selling wines out of a horse drawn cart. Today the 1600
acre estate is Rioja’s largest exporter of Gran Reserva wines and has won many
international awards.
Dark garnet in colour,
after aerating aromas of blackberry and earthy woods rose from the glass. Tart
cherry and soft leather elements in the medium body gave way to spicy black
pepper, toasty oak and rich vanilla in the lengthy finish. Simple and easy
drinking, this is a pleasant glass for the table.
