I gave my sister a fun wine club gift a few months ago. As
she isn’t really a fan of white wines, especially during the cold winter months,
she will deposit all of the white bottles she receives into my fridge. Therefore
I look for opportunities to sneak one into her glass to show her that white
wines can be delicious year round. Yesterday we decided to start cocktail hour
early, so I thought it a fantastic time to give a pour to a white bottle. I
selected Ermito de Nieve Verdejo 2011 because Verdejo wines tend to be bright
and fruity with a medium body and mineral backbone; features that I think make
it well-suited for a deep-rooted “red wine only” enthusiast.
Ermito de Nieve translates to “the little church in the snow”
and refers to the prayer the growers recite every year at the start of the new
growing season. The estate is located 850 meters above sea level in the most
western area of the Rueda near the town of Nava de la Asuncion. They are known
for their approachable, food friendly, expressive Verdejo wines.
Golden yellow in colour, aromas of freesia blossoms, melon
and green apple radiated from the glass. Fermented in stainless steel, luminous
flavours of melon, apricot and lemon abounded in the medium body. Citrus zest and clean minerals comprised the
crisp finish. Bright and friendly, this is a fantastic glass on its own or for enjoying along with cheese and olives or any light plate.
